XM Satellite Radios - How do they work?
XM Satellite radios receive a signal from a satellite located many thousands of miles in the sky. However, much unlike satellite television, you do not need a satellite dish to receive the signal. Since that would be difficult to carry around with you at the mall, the technology has been made much easier to use.
You could think of it more like a cellular telephone, only much more reliable, and without fading between towers, and of course, no roaming charges.
Satellite Radio Explained Simple
XM satellite radio has combined all of the best features of digital broadcasting, and has packaged it into over 200 channels of commercial-free listening for everybody's taste.
